Train crash in West Palm leaves 1 dead, 1 critically injured

One person died and another sustained critical injuries when a train struck them on Saturday, March 7, in West Palm Beach.

Police did not identify either the people or the rail company whose train struck them along the 500 block of Monroe Drive at about 6:20 p.m. Both Florida East Coast Railway freight and Brightline passenger trains use the tracks.

The Monroe Drive crossing is between Georgia Avenue and Dixie Highway north of Southern Boulevard. Police found one person dead at the scene, and paramedics drove the injured person to a hospital. They said the investigation remains open.

The wreck follows a crash in Delray Beach on Friday, March 6, involving a Brightline train that left an unidentified man with serious injuries. His car had become stuck on the tracks.

The fatal crash is at least the second one in Palm Beach County in 2026. In January, Delray Beach police said a freight train on the FEC tracks struck and killed a 78-year-old man at Southeast Fourth Street, between Atlantic Avenue and Linton Boulevard.

Pedestrian and vehicle crashes with trains have become common, as few natural barriers separate both the FEC rails and another set of tracks that lies to its west from cars, trucks and people on foot.

The rail lines have worked with state and federal officials to push for greater safety at crossings, including warning signs and flashing lights.
