Why are US gas prices going up?
Although there have been some fluctuations, gas prices in the U.S. have been increasing since the start of the Iran war Feb. 28, even though the U.S. imports about 8% of its oil from the Middle East.
The U.S. also exports more oil than it imports, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
So why are U.S. gas prices going up?
“It’s a global market,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics. “So, oil literally flows to the highest price.
“We produce as much as we consume,” Zandi said. “But at the end of the day, the producers here are going to sell to whoever can give them the highest prices, as well. They’re businesspeople.”
When will gas prices go down?
Even with a ceasefire, oil and gasoline prices will remain elevated for several months, unless some new source comes online., said James Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group.
Oil futures, which speculate on prices at a future date, remain elevated through the end of 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
