Oregon man identified as diver who died off coast of Anacapa Island

Authorities identified the man who died while diving off the coast of Anacapa Island on May 28.

Gerard Malloy, 73, was from Albany, Oregon, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. The medical examiner had not determined the cause or manner of Malloy’s death as of June 5.

Malloy was scuba diving in the water near an area of the island named Inspiration Point around 9:45 a.m. on May 28 when he suffered a medical emergency, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office previously said.

The island is part of the Channel Islands National Park and is located off the coast of Ventura.

The master diver leading the trip noticed the man, pulled him out of the water, saw he was not breathing and pulled him up to a nearby boat, the sheriff’s office previously said.

Despite life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
