While most people expect LeBron James to play for either the Los Angeles Lakers or the Cleveland Cavaliers next season, there is a chance he opts to join the Golden State Warriors. He is good friends with Warriors mainstays Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and he could be just the man to pry open their championship window for at least one more year.
On Thursday, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints said that James and Curry will reportedly meet soon to discuss the possibility of teaming up. He also said that the possibility of both living legends sharing the court for Golden State has increased at least a bit.
“League sources telling us at ClutchPoints that the Warriors are very much open to pursuing LeBron James and they plan to do so this offseason in free agency,” Siegel reported. “LeBron James, at the end of his career, he could still contribute a high level, we saw that in the playoffs. Pairing him with Stephen Curry is going to be something that the Warriors look to pursue over the next few weeks…
“It seemed very doubtful, it seemed low percentage, now it’s kind of questionable. Now there’s going to be some legs to this… That same source told us that Steph is planning on meeting and talking with LeBron about potentially joining the Warriors over the course of the next few weeks leading up to free agency.”
James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists a game during the regular season and 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists a game during the playoffs this year. Even at age 41, the soon-to-be free agent remains one of the biggest difference-makers in basketball.
Golden State went just 37-45 and missed the playoffs this season, but they had to deal with major injuries to Curry and six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler. Curry, like James, remains an elite player, but he is 38 years of age, and the franchise may be a bit desperate to find a way to squeeze one more NBA championship out of him.
The Warriors, like the Cavaliers, will be limited in how much money they can offer James. It is generally believed that he will not accept a mid-level contract offer, but stranger things have happened.
