There were 6,399 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Riverside Prep softball player Obie Obregon ended with 65.06% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The junior received 4,163 votes, beating out five other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Obregon helped provide the decisive play in Riverside Prep’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship victory over Great Oak on May 30. Her hard-hit ball in the fifth inning was misplayed at second base for an error, allowing two runs to score and giving the Silver Knights the lead. She also drew a walk in the first inning.
In the voting, Obregon beat her teammate Meeka Martinez, who received 28.63% at 1,832 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between May 25 to 30.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week’s games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.
