Honoring our past, shaping our future at Oxnard College | Your Turn

As we conclude Oxnard College’s 50th anniversary year, I am reminded that we were first built on the belief that higher education should be accessible and equitable for residents of Oxnard, Camarillo, and Port Hueneme. Known as the college with a heart, our legacy is about the people who first believed a college could transform our community, the students who have pursued their dreams here, and the employees who have dedicated their careers to helping them succeed.   Our story began with a community determined to secure a college close to home. When Oxnard College was officially established in 1975, more than 4,400 students enrolled during our first semester. Classes were held wherever space was available, including local businesses, churches, and schools. In so many ways, faculty and staff built a college before there was even a campus, creating opportunities for students right from the very start.  Over the past 50 years, we have grown with Ventura County, and today we proudly serve over 7,000 students. We have expanded opportunities across math and the sciences, the arts and humanities, social sciences, and career education while continuing to develop programs that respond to the needs of students and help them achieve their goals. Among them is our highly regarded Dental Hygiene program, which now serves as the launchpad for our first bachelor’s degree. Additionally, our Fire Academy has produced generations of firefighters who have gone on to protect communities in Ventura County, our state, and beyond. Generations of Condors have also represented our college through athletics, building a tradition of excellence that includes two California state championship titles for our men’s soccer program in 2015 and 2022.  Thousands of Oxnard College students have earned degrees and certificates, going on to transfer to four-year universities and enter careers that have strengthened our graduates, their families, and our region. Over the decades, they have gone on to lead in a wide range of fields, including public service and health care, education, and industry. Their impact has long helped Ventura County thrive.  Oxnard College’s legacy began with our founding faculty, classified professionals, and administrators. Their efforts were honored during our recent Founders Dinner that was attended by local elected officials, community partners, and district and college leaders. The evening gave us the opportunity to honor the people whose vision and service created the foundation we continue to build on.   Today, Oxnard College proudly serves our diverse communities and remains committed to offering high-quality education and personalized support services focused on increasing student learning and success. The needs of our community have changed over the past 50 years, and we know they will keep evolving. As we look to the future, we will continue building on the vision that first created Oxnard College — a vision grounded in expanding educational access to higher education and economic mobility here in Oxnard and throughout Ventura County.
