Vincent Jarvis struck out nine batters and Kaleb Kutz drove in the go-ahead run as Granite Hills edged Adelanto 4-2 on Thursday, April 9 to take control of the Desert Sky League baseball standings.
Granite Hills scored single runs in the first and second innings before Adelanto answered to tie the game 2-2 in the fourth. The Cougars regained the lead in the fifth, when Kutz singled to bring home Travon Jackson Jr., and later scored on a passed ball.
Jackson Jr. went 2 for 3 with one run, while Jarvis delivered a complete-game performance, allowing two runs on three hits.
For Adelanto, Adrian Chivichon pitched six innings, striking out six and allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
Earlier in the week, Granite Hills defeated Adelanto 12-2 on April 7. Caden Wharton struck out 15 in the victory and allowed one earned run on five hits over six innings.
Jackson Jr. went 3 for 5 with one RBI and three runs; Kutz went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs; and Khylen Wharton went 3 for 4.
Granite Hills is now 5-1 in league play, while Adelanto is 4-2 and tied with Victor Valley in the standings.
Victor Valley 5, Barstow 4
At Victorville, the Jackrabbits jumped into a tie for second place in the DSL standings with a victory over the Aztecs.
Milo Figueroa went 2 for 4 with one run and one stolen base, while Robert Middlebrooks went 2 for 3 with one RBI, one run and one stolen base.
For Barstow, Trevor Shenk allowed two unearned runs on three hits over five innings with five strikeouts.
University Prep 8, Hesperia Christian 3
At Victorville, the Jaguars sit atop the Cross Valley League standings with a 2-0 record after beating the Patriots.
Randy Pereira led the way by going 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases, while Isaiah Brown went 2 for 2 with one RBI and two runs.
For Hesperia Christian, Ezra Hawthorne went 1 for 3 with a home run and one RBI.
Softball Scores
Adelanto 8, Granite Hills 7
At Adelanto, Kylie Castanon and Ceonie Turner combined for seven hits and four RBIs as the Saints rallied to beat the Cougars.
Granite Hills scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-4 lead, but Adelanto answered with four runs in the bottom half to walk it off on a single from Justine Rivera.
Castanon ended 3 for 4 with a home run, one RBI and three runs and Turner went 2 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs, three runs and one stolen base. Adriana Martinez went 4 for 4 with two RBIs.
For Granite Hills, Kat McCartney went 3 for 4 with a run and one stolen base, and Emily Marks went 3 for 4 with one RBI and two runs.
University Prep 10, Hesperia Christian 8
At Victorville, the Jaguars picked up their first victory in CVL action.
Paityn Zimmerman led University Prep by hitting two home runs and finished with three RBIs. Sophia Perea went 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs, while Briseis Vargas went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.
For Hesperia Christian, Josslyn Vander Weide went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs; Riley Piorkowski went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, two runs and one stolen base; and Eden Skinner went 2 for 3 with a home run, three runs and one stolen base.
