RICHFIELD − A 23-year-old Illinois man is dead after he lost control of the ATV he was driving and struck a tree Saturday, May 23 in Adams County.
Adams County Dispatch received a report of an ATV crash near the 500 block of Cypress Avenue in the town of Richfield at 7:16 p.m. May 23, according to a news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. The caller reported the ATV operator was unresponsive and not breathing. Dispatch assisted the caller with CPR instructions while paging emergency services, according to the release.
The first deputy arrived within five minutes and began performing lifesaving measures on the ATV operator, according to the release. Waushara County EMS and Coloma Fire and Rescue arrived and took over lifesaving measures.
An initial investigation found the operator and only occupant of the ATV had left a seasonal property about 30 minutes before the crash. After the operator did not return, a group of people from the seasonal property had gone looking for the ATV operator, located the crash and called 911. The ATV operator failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway entering a ditch, was ejected from the ATV and struck a tree, according to the release.
Despite lifesaving efforts, the 23-year-old male operator from Oak Lawn, Illinois, died at the scene, according to the Adams County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The operator was not wearing a helmet, and alcohol and excessive speed are contributing factors in the crash, according to the release. The investigation is ongoing by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Washaura County EMS, Coloma Fire and Rescue, Adams County Medical Examiner’s Office and Murray Transport and Recovery.
