Wisconsin air quality improves, but state could see new wave of smoke

Emerging from July 17th’s smoke relief, Milwaukee’s Air Quality Index level is “moderate,” measuring 55 the morning of July 18.

But another northern wave of smoke is expected to move south Saturday morning or afternoon and linger through Sunday, July 19, according to the National Weather Service.

Trace amounts of smoke from wildfires in Canada and northern Minnesota will travel through “breezy” southwesterly winds, but could thicken later this evening, said Benjamin Sheppard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan.

There will be cooler temperatures across the state Saturday, with highs around the mid 80s across most of southern Wisconsin. Sunday, July 19 will be even cooler.

It will be mostly dry through Sunday, Sheppard said, with the next “noteworthy” period of widespread rain Monday, July 20, with one or two rounds of storms. Any new moisture will help pull smoke out of the air, he said.

Sheppard said an air quality advisory may be issued this weekend, but Milwaukee’s air quality level is no longer in the hazardous category.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ air quality alert lasted through 6 p.m. Friday, July 17 after being in the “very unhealthy” category Thursday, July 16.
