Royal Birkdale has seen obscure players put up near-record rounds at a record pace. Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns nearly set the men’s record with matching 62s in the second round, only to see Ryan Fox run out and put up another one in Round 3. The three have eight PGA Tour wins between them (Herbert plays on the LIV Golf Tour) and Burns’ runner-up finish at the U.S. Open is the closest any have come to a major title by a long shot. It’ll be Burns, who took a two-stroke lead into the clubhouse at 10 under, and Fox wrapping up play at The Open. They’ll be right after Si Woo Kim and Ryan Gerard, with Herbert and Ludvig Åberg coming before them.

It’s there that we finally find some of the stars of the game. Bryson DeChambeau didn’t let his ill-begotten two-stroke penalty drag him down too much, going 1 under on the day to end four shots behind Burns. Local favorite Tommy Fleetwood (-5) and reigning champ Scottie Scheffler (-4) are among those within range of the lead. Of the top 10 entering the final round, only DeChambeau has won a major, and none have won The Open.

There’s no telling where the next incredible low score could come from. Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen had a big day Saturday to get within shouting distance. He’ll have to deal with the cheers for Fleetwood in his group.

Could it be Jon Rahm’s turn Sunday? How about 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry or 2024 winner Xander Schauffele? All enter the final round 4 under, and Rahm and Lowry will be paired together. Or maybe we’ll see another run from a relative unknown, like Eric Cole, Cameron John or Kazuma Kobori? Hey, anything seems to be possible.
