Storms coming through central Wisconsin April 13 could bring heavy rain, frequent lightning, strong winds, hail and tornadoes.
Jeff Makowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Green Bay, told a USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporter April 13 storms are likely to develop late Monday afternoon and build in the early evening, moving across central Wisconsin during the evening hours. The storm could persist into the late evening, but by midnight, the storm is expected to head further east, he said.
What hazards can people expect during the April 13 storm?
People in central Wisconsin can expect heavy rain, frequent lightning, hail between 1-2 inches in diameter and strong, potentially damaging winds. Tornadoes cannot be ruled out in central Wisconsin during the evening hours, Makowski said.
The storm is most likely to bring lightning, strong winds and hail, but there will also be an elevated risk for a tornado or two somewhere across Wisconsin, Makowski said.
What areas of Wisconsin are at risk for severe weather?
Makowski said the greatest threat through the storm will be in west-central Wisconsin, moving through central Wisconsin.
The risks diminish further north, Makowski said.
Are there more storms coming?
Makowski said we’re seeing an “active springtime week” across the Midwest part of the country and more storms could come through central Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon and evening, although there is a greater risk across southern Wisconsin for stronger storms.
Central Wisconsin could see more rounds of showers and storms throughout the week, as well.
Flooding also a concern across central Wisconsin
The central Wisconsin area has been very wet recently with rainfall and melting snow, Makowski said, elevating the risk of rising rivers or creeks and broader flooding concerns.
People should keep an eye on the weather April 13 and throughout the week and make sure they have ways to receive weather information and alerts as conditions change, Makowski said.
