Community raises over $4K for Manitowoc mother, 3 children displaced by house fire

A Manitowoc mother, her three children and their dog were displaced by a house fire May 9 and the community stepped up to help the family with more than $4,000 raised through a GoFundMe page.

As of June 1, the GoFundMe page showed there was $4,212 raised for the family and at least two bikes were donated for the children.

The fire destroyed the family’s garage, shed and two decks, and caused severe damage to the back of the home.

Rape shield motion denied in Manitowoc case against Michael Kornely

In a motion hearing May 11, Manitowoc County Circuit Court Judge Mark Rohrer denied the motion to allow evidence normally excluded under rape shield protections in the sexual assault case against 76-year-old Michael Kornely from Francis Creek.

Kornely was charged with second-degree sexual assault of an intoxicated victim and third-degree sexual assault in a case file March 22, 2024.

The criminal complaint states the victim reported a sexual assault, alleging Kornely was the perpetrator.

A scheduling conference is now set in the matter for June 24 at the Manitowoc County Courthouse.

Manitowoc County felony child abuse case delayed for 15th time

Lavell L. Nance’s Manitowoc County Circuit Court case was postponed again because he still had no defense attorney during a hearing May 7.

Nance is eligible for a public defender, an attorney provided by the state of Wisconsin. However, no attorney has been appointed for him yet.

The case in which he was accused of a Class D felony, repeated physical abuse of a child with a high probability of great bodily harm, was filed Aug. 13, 2025.

His preliminary hearing has been rescheduled 15 times, with most of them being rescheduled because of a lack of a public defender to take his case.

While no attorney has been appointed to his case yet, a preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 11.

The 36th annual Breakfast on the Farm will be June 14 at Hochkammer Dairy Farm in Manitowoc.

The event will include guided farm tours, a petting zoo and a full breakfast menu with cheese, yogurt and, of course, milk.

Hochkammer Dairy Farm is a multi-generational family operation that raises dairy and beef cows and grows produce.

Manitowoc pothole hotspots submitted by readers

On April 14, we asked Manitowoc readers to share which roads had the biggest potholes.

Dozens sent in emails describing how their cars would shake going over the railroad tracks that cross Calumet Avenue or how many potholes they have to swerve around in the parking lot outside Dollar Tree.

With all the input, the Herald Times Reporter received dozens of streets where residents felt the ride was rougher than it should be.

The top street mentioned was Calumet Avenue, closely followed by Harbor Town Lane and Dewey Street.
