Brandon Woodruff to address shoulder injury Sunday but 'outlook isn't good'

There still isn’t much clarity on Brandon Woodruff’s situation.

Other than it doesn’t sound good.

When asked before the Milwaukee Brewers’ game against the Miami Marlins at American Family Field on Friday, July 17, manager Pat Murphy deferred comment on any specifics regarding the right shoulder injury that knocked the veteran out of his last start July 4 after only 3⅔ innings.

“I’ll have Woody handle all this with you on Sunday,” Murphy said. “The outlook isn’t good. You guys have determined that already. But I’m going to let Woody get specific with you and let him be the one to announce what he wants to announce in that regard.

“It’s extremely painful to even think about knowing what he meant to the organization and what he meant to this team.”

Since going on the injured list, Woodruff has conferred with Dr. Keith Meister, the surgeon who repaired his shoulder initially in October 2023. Woodruff had fluid drained from a cyst in his right shoulder by Meister in early May this year after being forced out of his April 30 start prematurely and missed nearly two months while recovering and rehabbing.

Woodruff returned with a flourish, shutting out the Cincinnati Reds over six innings with 10 strikeouts on June 22 and then held the Chicago Cubs scoreless over 5⅔ innings June 28 before being pulled early against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In nine starts, Woodruff went 1-1 with a 3.10 earned run average, 0.84 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) and 47 strikeouts in 45⅓ innings.

And in a case of strange timing, the Brewers are giving away Woodruff bobbleheads at Saturday’s game.

Woodruff and his wife, Jonie, also just welcomed their third child, Walker, into the world on July 15.
