A train bridge just north of Des Moines collapsed after a truck that exceeded the height of the bridge struck it while going under it.
Just before 6 p.m. on Friday, July 17, calls of an accident in the 440 block of Northwest Second Street were reported to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center, according to a news release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies found a vacuum/pumper truck that exceeded the 13 feet, 4 inches height of the railroad bridge over Second Street and had struck the bridge while driving north, the release said. The east side of the bridge collapsed.
The truck continued north and pulled over at the next intersection. There were no injuries reported, the release said.
Northwest Second Street is closed from Aurora Avenue to Broadway Avenue while investigators are at the scene.
