Former Dominican High School star and Milwaukee Bucks forward Alex Antetokounmpo is returning to Europe, as his agency announced Antetokounmpo will sign with Promitheas Patras B.C. of the Greek Basket League on June 27.
Antetokounmpo, who will turn 27 years old in August, spent last season on a two-way contract with the Bucks. By signing the deal, Thanasis, Giannis and Alex became the first trio of brothers to be signed to the same team in the same season.
Alex Antetokounmpo played in 33 games for the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ G League affiliate in Oshkosh, before getting the call to Milwaukee. He made his NBA debut on March 31 at Fiserv Forum to a large applause. In limited minutes, Antetokounmpo averaged 3.2 points in his appearances.
“It’s been awesome, just being able to be around, around the team, see how the Bucks culture works, just being able to see how it all works and be a sponge and soak it all in and learn as much as I can,” Antetokounmpo told the Journal Sentinel about the experience. “I’m blessed to be able to have that opportunity. Definitely tank you to them for believing in me in that regard. It’s been awesome.”
Antetokounmpo played for M Basket Mažeikiai (Lithuania), KK Podgorica (Montenegro) and Greek clubs PAOK and Aris after spending the 2022-24 seasons with the Herd. He has also played in Spain after leaving Dominican High School in 2020 to turn professional.
Looking back over his experience playing all over the world, Antetokounmpo told the Journal Sentinel the size of every player in the NBA is something not seen elsewhere on the globe.
“Even though I knew that was going to be something, that’s probably what caught me off guard the most,” Antetokounmpo said.
While with Dominican High School, Antetokounmpo was a two-time all-state selection and averaged 20.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game his senior season.
At the end of the season, Antetokounmpo reflected on playing high school basketball in Whitefish Bay and moving through the G League team in Oshkosh and on to the NBA in Milwaukee.
“I was talking to one of my close friends from high school and he was basically joking around, saying if only you went to Marquette you would have played every single level in Milwaukee. So, it’s just awesome. Coming from Greece, playing in middle school, playing in school, playing in AAU ball in Milwaukee. And being able to represent the city as well as I can, it’s a big thing for me. Maybe me more than my other brothers because I was younger.
“Milwaukee is home for me. It’s where I grew up. So to being able to represent the city as well a I can is a big honor for me, for sure.”
