This is concerning the articles about the Interstate 794 removal “I-794 removal could bring $500M in development, but more crashes” April 30). I use the freeway every day and it takes me almost an hour to get home from work. I can only think that the removal would only add to that time.
First of all, I would like to know how it snowballed into this. I was under the impression that this was just a dream of the non-residents of Milwaukee — corporations, big money people, that want to turn this city into another Chicago. Who are these “Rethink 794” people?
The city has already ruined streets with this stupid street construction of bike paths and has taken away street parking forcing residents to park off the street. Along with the city construction, Northwestern Mutual bought the end of Cass Street, taking away further street parking.
Isn’t there enough freeway work at this time? How much patience do the residents of Milwaukee have for all of this work? Now there is also Clybourn Street Bridge work that will last all summer.
What I would propose is that the Department of Transportation run a test of the removal of I-794. Close the freeway off for a weekend. Let’s see if the streets could indeed handle the traffic the way it is now, like the Rethink 794 group says it can.
