Vote: Des Moines Register metro-area male Athlete of the Week for June 8-14

The week of June 8-14 saw high school baseball take center stage in Iowa.

With spring sports ending, baseball and softball dominated the week of high school athletic competition in the state. The Des Moines metro area features seven teams ranked in their respective classes according to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, and there were numerous exciting games involving teams from the metro area.

There were also several standout individual performances by players from the metro area during the week.

Here are the Des Moines Register’s male Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of May June 8-14. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Grant Sorensen, Waukee

Sorensen lifted the 4A No. 6 Waukee baseball team past 2A No. 3 Unity Christian by a 4-3 score in nine innings at Bruce Rasmussen Memorial Field in Council Bluffs on June 14.

Sorensen was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of triples during the game. He walked twice, scored one run and drove in two.

Ethan Garcia-Guillen, Des Moines Lincoln

Gracia-Guillen pitched Des Moines Lincoln past Marshalltown, 4-3, on June 9 at Des Moines.

Garcia-Guillen went all seven innings, and he gave up three unearned runs on five hits to get the win. Garcia-Guillen was overpowering and in control all night, striking 11 batters and finishing with no walks.

Kamden Jorgensen, Saydel

Jorgensen had himself a night swinging the bat for Class 3A No. 10 Saydel during a 9-3 victory over Roland-Story as part of a doubleheader on June 9 at Saydel.

Jorgensen went a perfect 4-for-4, and he belted two home runs. Jorgensen scored three runs and drove in four for the Eagles.

Taylon Squire, Martensdale St. Marys

Squire delivered a masterful pitching performance for 1A No. 5 Martensdale St. Marys during a 15-0 victory over East Union as part of a doubleheader sweep by the Blue Devils on June 13 at Martensdale.

Squire fired a complete-game no-hitter for MSM. He struck out six batters and walked one during the game.

Cole Moore, Van Meter

Moore had a big day on offense for 2A No. 4 Van Meter during a pair of 10-0 victories over Panorama on June 12 at Van Meter.

Moore was a combined 4-for-7 with two doubles and one home run over the two games. He contributed four runs and RBIs apiece during the doubleheader.
