Remembering May 4, 1970: Annual commemoration marks Kent State shootings

A somber crowd gathered under a cloudless sky on Monday, May 4 at the Kent State Commons to remember the 56th anniversary of the moment deadly gunfire erupted on campus.

The commemoration honors the four killed and nine wounded on May 4, 1970, when the Ohio National Guard opened fire into a crowd of students protesting against the Vietnam War.

The annual memorial event included remarks from university students and administrators, the ringing of the Victory Bell and a moment of silence at 12:24 p.m. ‒ the time 56 years ago when shots rang out.
