With running back Jonathan Taylor entering the final year of his deal, are the Indianapolis Colts looking to sign him to a contract extension any time soon?
ESPN’s Stephen Holder recently provided some insight.
“The Colts have shown little initiative when it comes to extending contracts so far this offseason, so this is a story to monitor heading into training camp,” Holder wrote. “Keep in mind: When Taylor faced a similar scenario in 2023, it culminated in a contract standoff that lasted two months.”
Holder also noted that Taylor currently ranks seventh among running backs in average annual contract value at $14 million per year.
Perhaps of note for Taylor, Devon Achane signed a four-year, $64 million extension this offseason. He is now the third-highest-paid running back in football behind Christian McCaffrey at $19 million per year and Saquon Barkley at $20.6 million per year.
Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson could be next in line to be the NFL’s highest-paid running back.
Taylor is a three-time Pro Bowler and made one All-Pro team. He played in 13 games in 2024 and all 17 games last season. rushing for 1,431 yards and 1,585 yards, respectively, as one of the more productive backs in football each year.
Taylor recently made it known that he would like to remain with the Colts.
“I would love to be a Colt for life,” Taylor said, via the Indy Star’s Joel Erickson. “I’ve definitely expressed that to them.”
