Trojans will face NFL-caliber receiver Jeremiah Smith this season

In the Big Ten Conference, the best players in college football reign. One of those players is the consensus No. 1 player in the country, receiver Jeremiah Smith. Since his freshman season, it was apparent there were few players like him. This season, the Trojans will have the task of slowing him down.

In a recent article, Brad Crawford ranked the best players in college football at the major skill positions on offense. Jeremiah Smith cracked the list at the number one spot. Here is what he had to say about Smith:

“Smith is the kind of talent that comes around once in a generation. The gaudy NFL comparisons aren’t premature — they’re warranted. He combines the size, physicality, speed and ball skills of some of the NFL’s most dominant receivers over the last 20 years, making him nearly impossible to defend in one-on-one situations. Whether it’s winning contested catches, creating separation downfield or taking over a game in the biggest moments, Smith checks every box.

And he’s still only scratching the surface. Despite already looking like college football’s most unstoppable receiver, Smith’s ceiling remains incredibly high. As polished as he is now, his best football is still ahead of him — and that’s a frightening reality for every team that will lose sleep over developing coverage schemes to try and halt his efforts.”

In Week 11, the Trojans will be taking on one of the best players in college football. Limiting what Smith is able to do will take more than a week’s amount of game planning; thankfully, the Trojans will have a bye week added to that preparation. This will be a great game to see what a difference having Gary Patterson Jr. makes. He and the Trojans’ defense will have to put up their best performance vs Jeremiah Smith if they want to pull off an upset.
