An 18-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday after an armed carjacking in Peoria.
Cole M. McCoy was arrested after he and two other people carjacked a man in Peoria’s East Bluff and took his vehicle for a ride before being stopped along State Route 90 in north Peoria County, according to police.
According to the Peoria Police Department, officers responded to the 2600 block of North Springdale Avenue at 2:20 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a report of an armed vehicular hijacking in the area. When police arrived, they found a man who said that three people had approached him, one armed with a handgun.
The three took the man’s car and fled the scene. The victim was not injured.
License plate cameras found the vehicle a short while later traveling northbound along Prospect Road from Tripp Avenue in Peoria Heights. Police officers attempted a traffic stop, but it was unsuccessful. Peoria police, Peoria County sheriff’s deputies and Illinois State Police observed the vehicle heading onto Interstate 74.
Finally, the vehicle came to a stop along Route 90, with McCoy taken into custody. The other two men he was with are still at large.
McCoy was arrested on charges of aggravated fleeing and eluding; aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm; unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle; criminal damage to property; mob action; reckless driving; and other traffic violations.
