Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles provided several injury updates before training camp kicks off on Wednesday, which included the latest on some notable starters.
Linebacker T.J. Edwards was placed on the non-football injury (NFI) list to start camp, but Poles said it’s a right calf injury that’s “nothing major,” and he shouldn’t be out long. Rookie linebacker Keyshaun Elliott, who will start the summer on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list is also expected to have a limited stay before hitting the practice field.
The most concerning update regards cornerback Kyler Gordon, who has been battling soft tissue injuries dating back to last season, where he appeared in just three regular-season games amid two stays on injured reserve. Gordon missed most of the offseason program after suffering another soft tissue injury, and he’s starting training camp off on the PUP list.
While there were encouraging updates about Edwards and Elliott’s returns, the same can’t be said for Gordon. According to Poles, there’s no timetable for his return.
“Obviously, he’s frustrated. We’re frustrated,” Poles said. “Everybody here is putting time and effort to getting him back. All hands on deck.”
Elsewhere, safety Elijah Hicks is dealing with a shin problem while left tackle Ozzy Trapilo, defensive tackle Shemar Turner and linebacker Noah Sewell are all recovering from surgery with no timetable for return.
