The Chicago Bears have announced a couple of roster moves on report day for training camp, which included star defensive end Montez Sweat.
Sweat was placed on the non-football illness list on Tuesday while safety Elijah Hicks was placed on the physically unable to perform list. According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, the Bears expect Sweat to return in a few days. Hicks reported shin discomfort when he arrived to camp on Tuesday. Cronin notes that Hicks is “on the mend, walking around, and the Bears do not see his injury as anything major.”
The NFI list is used for players who are injured away from team activities while the PUP list is used for players with football-related injuries. These players count against the 90-man roster and can attend meetings and use the team facilities but cannot practice until medically cleared. They must be removed from the list, and medically cleared, before they’re allowed to practice.
The Bears previously placed linebacker T.J. Edwards on the non-football injury list while cornerback Kyler Gordon, offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo, defensive tackle Shemar Turner and linebackers Noah Sewell and Keyshaun Elliott all landed on the physically unable to perform list.
General manager Ryan Poles shared Tuesday that Hicks was dealing with a shin injury while also providing other injury updates heading into training camp. Edwards and Elliott aren’t expected to remain long on the NFI and PUP lists, respectively. Meanwhile, there’s no timetable for return for Gordon or players who are coming off surgery, including Trapilo, Turner and Sewell.
