Bears HC Ben Johnson opens up about relationship with QB Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears are banking on head coach Ben Johnson to maximize quarterback Caleb Williams’ potential, and it’s certainly been an encouraging start through the first month of the season.

Williams had the best game of his career against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, with a career-high four touchdowns and 142.6 passer rating, which earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Despite some unwarranted criticism surrounding Williams, he’s had the best start to a career by a No. 1 overall pick in NFL history. Through his first 21 games, Williams has 28 touchdowns and just eight interceptions.

Williams has shown impressive progress in four weeks, and his relationship with Johnson has been a big factor in that early success.

“It’s been really consistent,” Johnson said. “We don’t really waver, either one of us. We meet every day, and we go over the plan. We go over things that are on our mind. It’s really critical for our relationship that we continue to have open and honest communication, and we’ve been very good with that.

“On game day, I trust that he’s put in the preparation, and I just let him go out there and play ball. We stress them enough over the course of training camp and over the course of a weekly practice schedule that come game day, this thing should be free and flow free for him. And I think that’s really what he adheres to.”

Williams’ early success through the first quarter of the season is certainly encouraging heading into the final 13-game slate, where he’ll be tested by some good defenses and have opportunities to continue his improvement in Year 1 under Johnson.
