A woman died, and a St. Johns County sheriff’s deputy was hospitalized, following a two-vehicle crash that closed a major St. Augustine intersection for several hours.
The crash on Florida 16 at Stratton Boulevard happened about 8: 20 p.m. Saturday, July 18, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, which is investigating the collision.
The Highway Patrol preliminary investigation showed a 68-year-old St. Augustine woman driving a sport utility vehicle was southbound on Stratton when she attempted to turn left onto 16 at the intersection.
A 30-year-old male deputy, also driving an SUV, was westbound on 16.
The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on social media that a deputy was injured but provided no information regarding whether he was driving a Sheriff’s Office vehicle or responding to a call for service at the time of the collision.
The FHP reported that the woman turned in front of the deputy. The front of the deputy’s SUV collided with the driver’s side of the woman’s SUV. Her vehicle spun around before coming to rest in the left turn lane. The deputy’s vehicle crossed the eastbound lanes and then collided with a stop sign on the side of the road.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy sustained “serious injuries” and was taken to the hospital. The woman had been wearing a safety belt, but the deputy wasn’t, according to the crash report.
No names have been released.
