New Bucs LB Alex Anzalone set to make a major impact on the defense

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made several notable additions this offseason, but when it comes to making an immediate impact in 2026, veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone may stand above the rest. Much of the attention has been focused on first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr., and rightfully so. However, rookie pass rushers often need time to adjust to the NFL. Anzalone, meanwhile, enters training camp as an experienced veteran expected to step into a starting role from Day 1.

Following Lavonte David’s retirement, the Buccaneers needed more than just someone to fill a starting spot. They needed a veteran capable of leading the defense, communicating adjustments, and helping maintain continuity in Todd Bowles’ system. Anzalone has the experience to handle those responsibilities. His fit within Bowles’ defense is another reason he could have such a significant impact. Earlier this offseason, Anzalone said he was excited about the opportunities the scheme provides linebackers to rush the passer and force turnovers.

Those have long been defining characteristics of Bowles’ defenses, and Anzalone’s versatility should allow the Buccaneers to remain aggressive. Anzalone also brings coverage skills that the Bucs lacked in 2025, being picked on nearly every game by tight ends and running backs alike over the middle.

With a veteran in the middle of the defense, younger players like Rueben Bain Jr., Yaya Diaby, and Calijah Kancey can focus on playing fast rather than taking on additional leadership responsibilities. That stability could be especially valuable as Tampa Bay transitions into its first season without David. Anzalone may not generate the same headlines as a first-round draft pick, but his role could be just as important.

The Buccaneers are counting on him to help replace one of the greatest defensive players in franchise history while serving as a leader for a defense that has undergone several changes.
