MUNCIE, IN — A homicide suspect from Michigan was captured on the morning of Monday, July 20, in western Delaware County.
Jeff Stanley, chief deputy for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, said the man was taken into custody about 10:25 a.m. in the 3900 block of South Delaware County Road 1000 West.
According to Indiana State Police, a chase began about 10 a.m. Monday when members of the Indiana State Excise Police observed a southbound vehicle — on Interstate 69 near the 262-mile marker in Grant County — that had been reported stolen and was linked to a homicide in Wyoming, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids.
When state police troopers and Grant County deputies tried to make a “high-risk traffic stop,” the vehicle — driven by James W. Jackson, 43, of Wyoming — fled, reaching speeds over 100 mph, according to an Indiana State Police release.
State troopers said Jackson — described as a suspect in the Michigan homicide — continued southbound on the interstate, “passing other vehicles by driving on the median and along the shoulder.”
Multiple efforts to deflate his vehicle’s tires failed.
The chase ended when the Michigan man’s vehicle left the interstate and entered a field near the 236-mile marker in southwestern Delaware County, about two miles north of the Daleville interchange.
A helicopter observed the abandoned vehicle in a field near Delaware County roads 1000 West and 170 South. Davis was also observed walking northbound on County Road 1000 West and was taken into custody “without further incident,” the release said.
The chase and search resulting in his arrest involved state police troopers, deputies from Delaware and Grant counties, Warren police and Indiana State Excise Police.
Jackson was taken to the Grant County Jail in Marion, where he was being held on suspicion of resisting law enforcement, receiving stolen property and criminal recklessness.
