Leon County burn ban extended again due to drought

Leon County is extending its burn ban another week, marking the second time the latest ban has been lengthened.

The news was shared by Leon County Commission chair Christian Caban April 10 as part of an unrelated press conference at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.

“The drought has gotten worse, Leon County particularly, and surrounding counties (are) at the worse part of the drought in Florida, I believe, extreme or exceptional drought,” Caban said.

He reference was to severity levels of a drought, which, according to a new post from the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, the Big Bend is highlighted as “exceptional.”

The Tallahassee Fire Department also has joined in on the conversation, posting on social media a warning to residents of the dry conditions and the increased risk for wild fire activity.

“Leon County has issued a temporary ban of all burning of yard debris, including leaves, limbs, grass and other vegetative matter, until conditions improve,” it said. “The Tallahassee Fire Department is following this countywide restriction and encourages everyone to do the same to help reduce fire risk.”

Leon County will be releasing further information about the extended ban.
