NFL insider explains 49ers' Day 2 draft strategy

The San Francisco 49ers are on the clock first in the second round of the 2026 NFL draft after they traded back from No. 27 twice. Now, San Francisco will have the Nos. 33 and 58 picks in the second round and the No. 90 pick in the third round.

It’s a great spot to be in for several reasons, least of which being they’ll have their pick of the litter at the top of the second. But this position is also the target of trades from other teams. And, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the 49ers are “very open” to moving back again to pick up more draft capital.

General manager John Lynch hinted at this strategy before the first round and followed through with his two trades in the first round. The 49ers only have picks in the first, second and fourth rounds, so it makes sense that Lynch would want move capital to have more bites at the apple for prospects they’re interested in.

The 49ers still have needs at receiver, offensive line, secondary and edge rusher — all positions they can find on Day 2.
