Ty Simpson’s dream of playing in the NFL came true on Thursday night, and he couldn’t have landed in a better situation. The Los Angeles Rams are bringing him into their ecosystem, spending the 13th overall pick on the former Alabama quarterback.
It was a bold decision, one that caught many people off guard, and even Simpson says he had “no clue” the Rams were going to take him. But he couldn’t be happier to be joining Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles.
When the pick was made official, Les Snead and Sean McVay called Simpson to let him know the news, and he had to fight back tears. He was emotional on the phone while in the green room, but he still carried himself confidently.
“Let’s go make history, coach,” he said.
“Enjoy this night, man. You earned it. Have fun,” McVay replied.
Draft calls are always fun to watch. They show how much these prospects care about the opportunities being presented to them, whether they’re a first-round pick or a seventh-rounder. They just want a chance to prove themselves and that’s what Simpson will get to do in L.A.
It just might not be for a couple of years.
