Jeff Daniels plays Ronald Reagan in “The Brink of War,” which is due to open in theaters in August.
A trailer for the film shows Daniels as the former president, and it chronicles the 1986 meeting between Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, who is played by Jared Harris.
Daniels’ fellow Metro Detroiter J.K. Simmons stars as George Shultz, who held a Cabinet position with the Reagan administration.

The film was originally titled “Reykjavík,” after the Icelandic city which hosted the Reagan-Gorbachev meeting.
The film was shot in 2024 in Reykjavík, and Daniels told The News prior to shooting that he studied tapes of Reagan on YouTube, learning the rhythms and cadence of his voice. He said he made a one-hour recording of Reagan doing various interviews, which he would listen to on loop on his headphones while riding his bicycle around Chelsea.
The film, written and directed by Michael Russell Gunn, is due to open in theaters on Aug. 14.
