Bears QB Caleb Williams making it a focus to improve in this area

Throughout his stellar 2025 season, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams thrived with marvelous highlight throws and leading his team to thrilling comeback victories. But some of the technical side of his statistics still haven’t lived up to par.

Even while breaking the franchise record for single-season passing yards (3,942) and throwing 27 touchdowns to just seven interceptions, Williams struggled with his completion percentage, a factor in his game that he says will be his biggest focus this offseason. Williams took a step back when it comes to completion percentage in his first year working with Ben Johnson, ending the 2025 season with just a 58.1% completion percentage, down from his 62.5% he had as a rookie last year.

In comparison, fellow second-year quarterback Drake Maye, who took the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl, led the NFL in the category with a 72% completion percentage. During minicamp, Williams said his next focus this offseason is on improving his completion efficiency and how it’ll help continue his development in his young career.

“It’s just get the completion percentage up, keep the offense on the field more, score as many points as possible, be the highest-scoring offense, because that’s my part in the team, going out there and orchestrating it and being able to go out there and score whether it’s handoffs or passes, whatever, that doesn’t matter,” Williams said. “It’s just being able to put up as many points as possible to help our team win as many games as possible and then keeping the turnovers very low.”

One of the comments made by Williams that should have Bears fans excited is that he wants to help turn the offense into the highest-scoring offense in the NFL. In today’s NFL world, offense is king, and there have been decades of dreams that Chicago could one day have a high-powered offense. And they may be headed in that direction with their young quarterback and head coach Ben Johnson working together, always looking for ways to level up.

The completion percentage is an easy talking point when criticizing Williams, but it’s clear the Bears leader is taking it as a serious focus point for him to grow in his third season in the league. And Johnson once again is holding Williams to a 70% completion percentage goal. If Williams is successful, it could lead to even greater success for Chicago after getting to the NFC divisional playoffs last season.
