A 76-year-old Apple Valley man was fatally struck by a vehicle, which then fled the scene without stopping to help, on Sunday, May 24, authorities said.
Johnny Guerra, 76, died in the 10:20 p.m. collision at Kiowa and Sandia roads, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner officials.
Guerra was walking across Kiowa road when he was hit, sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.
“An unknown vehicle drove north on Kiowa Road and collided with the pedestrian in the northbound lane near Sandia Road,” the statement said.
Guerra died from his injuries at the scene.
No description of the vehicle or the driver was available.
The investigation is being spearheaded by the Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
Several people gathered in an empty field on Kiowa Road to watch as authorities investigated the incident.
Apple Valley resident Leah Smith told the Daily Press that portions of Kiowa Road are not well lit, and that pedestrians traveling along the roadway do it at their “own risk.”
“There’s only one stop sign on Kiowa Road between Bear Valley Road and the (railroad) tracks, so people speed all the time,” Smith said. “If you’re walking at night, people aren’t going to see you.”
