Top Milwaukee baseball teams solidify standing in area rankings

The Milwaukee area’s top high school baseball programs are finding their stride as we enter the later stages of the regular season.

Five of our top-six area teams entering last week went 4-0 over the past week as the cream continues to rise to the top in area baseball. Franklin leaps over New Berlin Eisenhower for a 4-0 week of quality wins.

Whitefish Bay slides out of the top 10 after splitting four games, and Marquette (9-9) falls off of others considered after an 0-4 week. Oak Creek joins others considered after winning eight of its last nine to get its season back on track. A Menomonee Falls program that has won five of six also joins others considered this week.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Kenosha Indian Trail

The Hawks (6-4) worked their way up in Southeast Conference play to third in the league with a decisive three-game sweep of Racine Case last week. Briar Thoe shoved for seven innings of three-hit ball with eight strikeouts and four double plays induced in a 5-0 win on May 5. Indian Trail took the first of two 10-0 victories on the week the following day as Matthew Baumann pitched five innings while allowing four hits and striking out three. Charles Hamilton finished the game with a five-pitch clean inning. In the May 8 victory over Case to close out the week, Cameron Bentz pitched a five-inning complete game, striking out seven while allowing three hits and a walk. The Hawks scored 25 runs on 25 hits on the week, led by Owen Zeller’s .556 average with five RBIs. Josiah Black and Jacob Johnson added four hits each over the course of the week.

Indian Trail had a three-game road tilt scheduled entering the week, starting at Kenosha Bradford on May 14. The Hawks travel to Racine Horlick on May 15 and then visit Oak Creek the following morning.

COMING UP

Slinger at Grafton, 5 p.m. May 13: The latter of a two-game slate between North Shore foes takes place amid a five-team race of teams within two games of each other in the league.

Mukwonago at Oak Creek, 4:30 p.m. May 14: Classic 8 newcomer Oak Creek looks to establish itself in the latter of two games this week with Mukwonago as both teams chase conference leader Muskego.

New Berlin Eisenhower at Muskego, 5:15 p.m. May 15: The reigning WIAA Division 1 state champion hosts the reigning D2 state champion as both teams chase repeat titles.
