DOJ investigating Oshkosh officer-involved shooting at Fleet Farm

OSHKOSH – A man died after an Oshkosh police officer shot him Sunday morning, May 10, in the Fleet Farm parking lot.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating. Here’s what we know — and what we don’t know — so far.

What happened in the Oshkosh officer-involved shooting at Fleet Farm?

What we know: The officer was dispatched at about 8:18 a.m. to Fleet Farm, 177 N. Washburn St., after a report of a stolen firearm, the DOJ said. The incident happened shortly after the store opened at 8 a.m.

What do investigators say led the officer to fire?

What we know: Authorities said the officer contacted the man in the parking lot. The man did not comply with commands, continued walking toward the officer and pulled a gun from his waistline, the DOJ said. The officer fired, striking the man. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Did anyone else get hurt?

What we know: Emergency responders provided aid and took the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the DOJ said. No officers or bystanders were injured.

Is there body-camera video of the shooting?

What we know: The officer was wearing a body-worn camera and was placed on administrative leave under department policy, the DOJ said.

What we don’t know yet: The DOJ has not said when (or whether) body-camera footage will be released.

Who is investigating the officer-involved shooting?

What we know: The DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the inquiry with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Police Department and the Winnebago County Medical Examiner’s Office.

What happens next in the DOJ investigation?

What we know: Investigators said officers are cooperating. The DCI will submit its findings to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office after the investigation is complete.

What we don’t know yet: A timeline for the investigation and any potential charging decision has not been announced.
