Suspect in southwest Detroit supermarket arson arrested

Detroit fire officials said a suspect who set a fire Monday at a popular southwestern Detroit supermarket has been arrested.

Firefighters were called to E&L Supermercado at 6000 West Vernor Highway near Calvary Street at about 7:45 a.m. for a report of shopping carts on fire outside of the building, according to authorities.

First responders arrived and found flames climbing up the building’s façade. Fire crews summoned additional manpower, but the blaze was contained quickly, and the alarm was downgraded, officials said.

No injuries were reported.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Southwest Detroit community as they support the team at E & L,” the Detroit Fire Department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Fire Investigation Division, a joint task force between the fire department and the Detroit Police Department, said detectives reviewed security camera video of the arson and located a suspect.

Police said they arrested the suspect on Monday morning with help from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Officials said the investigation is being handled by the Detroit Fire Investigation Division and the ATF.
