ST. JOHNS — A new Harbor Freight Tools store taking shape off South U.S. 27 in St. Johns will open earlier than originally announced.
The California-based retailer confirmed the new location in the Southpoint Mall at 1043 S. U.S. 27 in March, estimating that the store would open in the fall. The timeline has shortened.
The store, in a 16,000-square-foot space previously occupied by a movie theater, is expected to open sometime this summer, according to a news release from the company this week.
“A formal announcement will follow with the official grand opening date,” it said.

The new store, expected to employ between 10 and 15 people, “is part of the company’s continued effort to make professional-quality tools and unbeatable value more convenient and accessible to customers where they live and work,” according to the release.
The mall is also occupied by Biggby Coffee, Subway, Mancino’s, H&R Block and Wild Wild West Tobacco. A Michigan Secretary of State office that was near the theater entrance for years has since moved to another building within the mall. The building where Harbor Freight is opening a store is anchored on the north end by the Clinton County Medical Center and on the south end by Clinton County RESA.
Harbor Freight Tools has more than 50 locations in Michigan, according to its website. Those include two stores in Lansing, one in Owosso, another in Mt. Pleasant, as well as others in Jackson, Battle Creek and Livonia.
The stores carry “automotive, air and power tools, storage, outdoor power equipment, generators, welding supplies, shop equipment, hand tools,” according to Harbor Freight Tools’ website.
