Milwaukee Academy of Science has acknowledged an “unfortunate misinterpretation of a WIAA rule” has led to the forfeit of seven boys basketball victories.
A statement from the school on Jan. 16, attributed to MAS chief development officer Brittany Warren, reads as follows:
“Milwaukee Academy of Science acknowledges an unfortunate misinterpretation of a WIAA rule that has resulted in consequences for our basketball program. We are grateful that our scholar-athletes will have the opportunity to continue performing on and off the court with excellence and character.”
Journal Sentinel requests for additional information, including who currently leads the MAS program, were not answered by MAS officials. The Novas’ record fell from 8-4 to 1-11 as a result of the forfeits. MAS competes independent of any conference affiliation, so no conference standing was impacted. WIAA director of communications Todd Clark said the issue leading to the forfeits was self-reported by MAS.
The Novas, who are the defending WIAA state champions in Division 3, were elevated to D2 ahead of the 2025-26 season.
In June, MAS announced the ouster of 18-year coach Agape Keys off the heels of the title season, a move Keys said in an internal email “feels like a hostile takeover.” Raymont McElroy was later hired to take over the program.
In a Dec. 3 interview with the Journal Sentinel, McElroy touted his prior relationships with players on the MAS roster through AAU basketball.
“This was the perfect job for me. I knew some of the guys already were attached to Power 5, the AAU that comes out of MAS, so it just all makes sense for me to be here,” McElroy said in that story, which published Dec. 4.
Power 5 is a Wisconsin AAU program founded by Milwaukee native and current New Orleans Pelicans forward Kevon Looney. MAS CEO Anthony McHenry also serves as the volunteer director of Power 5.
