MARATHON – It flew 220 feet, 8 inches.
That’s the distance that Marathon thrower Chris Marcell posted in the discus throw event at the WIAA Division 3 Stratford regional to help his team win the conference championship, and place his name into a group of a very select few.
“It’s number two in the nation at the moment,” Marathon track coach Curt Miller said. “And I do believe that it’s, kind of, the unofficial best Wisconsin number all time. State records are kept for state meets but now they have them for any meet and there’s no recorded throw farther than his ever in history, which is pretty cool.”
Marathon has had a history of strong throwers during the past few decades, with Marcell emerging as one of the best in his junior season this year, capturing multiple records over the course of the season. Last season Marcell finished as the Division 3 state runner up in the discus state championship.
Despite still having the state meet and an entire senior season of play still on the horizon for Marcell in his high school career, the imprint he has already left on the Marathon track program is unprecedented.
“I’ve been in athletics and education for over 20 years, and I’ve yet to meet a kid that is as dedicated and hardworking as Chris,” Miller said. “He has earned every bit of his success through time and effort in the weight room. He’s an exceptional athlete and he’s put in the work it takes to take his successes to the next level.”
