Former Wisconsin and current Denver Broncos defensive lineman Matt Henningsen tore his Achilles during training camp practice last week, ending his 2025 season.
According to 9NEWS’ Mike Klis, the injury occurred during a one-on-one drill during the Broncos’ joint practice against the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Sean Payton announced Henningsen will have surgery on the tendon when the team returns to Denver after its Saturday preseason contest against the 49ers.

Henningsen is entering his fourth NFL season, all with the Broncos. The team selected him in the sixth round (No. 206 overall) in the 2022 NFL draft. The former Badger played in all 17 games in both 2022 and 2023, totaling a combined 40 tackles, two for loss and two quarterback hits. He spent the 2024 season on the team’s practice squad.
The defensive lineman excelled in four years as a primary contributor on Wisconsin’s defensive line. Removing a 2020 season cut short due to injury, Henningsen suited up for 40 games from 2018-21 and totaled 89 tackles, 14 for loss, eight sacks, four pass deflections, three fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns. He was a key member of a 2021 Wisconsin defense that is considered the best in program history.
Henningsen’s focus will turn to 2026 as he tries to continue his NFL career.
