Fond du Lac boy, 13, injured after crashing with van while riding bike Friday afternoon

FOND DU LAC – A 13-year-old boy who was riding his bike at the intersection of East Pioneer Road and Martin Avenue Friday afternoon suffered significant trauma to his left leg after a crash with a delivery van.

A news release from Fond du Lac Police Department said officers and Fire Rescue crew responded to the crash at around 4:29 p.m. June 6.

The boy was conscious and breathing while being treated at the scene, police said. He was flown by helicopter to a trauma center because of the extent of his injuries, which police said do not appear to be life-threatening.

In the release, Police Chief Aaron Goldstein said: “Our hearts go out to the young boy and his family and we are hopeful for a full recovery. As summer begins and more children are outside riding bikes, this is a powerful reminder for parents to review safety rules with their kids, including wearing a helmet, walking bikes across busy streets and making eye contact with drivers before crossing, to name a few.”

Police said preliminary investigation indicates the boy was riding his bicycle westbound on the sidewalk. According to witness statements, the traffic light for southbound and northbound vehicles had turned green, and a delivery driver began to enter the intersection facing northbound. At that moment, the bicyclist collided with the front passenger side of the delivery van.

The incident remains under investigation by police and no further details were immediately released.
