Final public approval for proposed Buc-ee's in Oak Creek set for Sept. 23

Buc-ee’s is back on the agenda in Oak Creek for its final public approval.

The final site and architectural plans for the proposed 73,370-square-foot travel center and 120-pump fueling plaza will be presented to the Oak Creek Plan Commission at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, for review, according to a news release Sept. 19 from the City of Oak Creek.

If approved, Buc-ee’s can move to close on the nearly 30-acre property at West Elm Road and South 27th Street and obtain permits to begin construction.

This meeting, originally scheduled for June 10, was delayed, in part, due to a traffic impact analysis by Buc-ee’s and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. That TIA is now completed and “requires a significant investment from Buc-ee’s involving roadway expansion on 27th Street, West Elm Road and the I-94 interchange,” according to the release.

Oak Creek City Administrator Andrew Vickers said he is thrilled Buc-ee’s sees the value in the public infrastructure investment.

“We applaud Buc-ee’s coming into our community as a true partner. Making this investment is a big part of that as traffic and safety have always been the city’s priority,” Vickers said in the release.

There had been a lawsuit brought against the City of Oak Creek by neighbors of the property related to zoning approvals for the development, but it was dismissed on Aug. 27, according to online court records.

Buc-ee’s has stated its goal to open the Oak Creek location in early 2027. Vickers told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in August 2025 he expects the city will receive an updated construction timeline from Buc-ee’s following the approval, if given.

The development is expected to bring 175 full-time jobs paying between $18 and $20 per hour, according to the release.

Buc-ee’s is also looking to build in DeForest, but that development is encountering a different set of issues related to road improvements. Whichever project is completed first will be the first Buc-ee’s in Wisconsin.
