Same scenario, different day.
It’s win or go home for the top two seeds of the Tallahassee Regional, with Florida State baseball’s season on the brink as the Seminoles face Coastal Carolina in an elimination game that started on Saturday, May 30.
And, following two weather delays, the suspended game is scheduled to resume Sunday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at Howser Stadium.
The Seminoles were able to hold on, eliminating Coastal Carolina 2-1.
St. John’s plated four runs in the final two innings, including three in a dreadful eighth inning for FSU, to stun the Seminoles with a 6-5 victory. The Chanticleers ran into a red-hot Northern Illinois team, which won the program’s first regional game, 12-10, behind an eight-run fourth inning.
The upsets now pit the top two seeds of the regional in an elimination game that will feature a pitching matchup befitting of a game in Omaha.
The Seminoles will throw ace lefty Wes Mendes, the ACC Pitcher of the Year, who holds a 2.93 ERA and 9-3 record. The Chanticleers will throw ace and top-20 MLB Draft prospect, righty Cameron Flukey. He has dealt with injury this season and recently returned to the mound at the end of April. He’s made six appearances and holds a 4.35 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched, 28 strikeouts, 20 hits, and seven walks issued.
First pitch is set for 2 p.m. from Howser.

Beard, FSU advance in regional with victory
Trey Beard was outstanding.
Beard, FSU’s starter-reliever, held CC scoreless over the game’s final four innings and the Seminoles eliminated Coast Carolina 2-1 in the Tallahassee Regional at Howser.
CC, which had been limited to two hits in the game, put the tying run on first base with a one-out single. However, Beard – making his second relief appearance of the season – registered a pair of strikeouts (his eighth and ninth) to save the day and earn his first collegiate save.
FSU starter Wes Mendes and Beard combined to strike out 17 in the game. Coastal lost to LSU in last year’s national championship game.
FSU will face its second elimination game Sunday at 6 p.m. against the loser between St. John’s and Northern Illinois. That winners’ bracket game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
‘Locked in’: FSU’s Beard holding off CC
ACCN game announcer Devon Travis, a former Seminole, described FSU starter-reliever Trey Beard as “locked in” during the eighth inning of the broadcast. Indeed. The lefty has recorded six strikeouts in three scoreless innings for the Seminoles.
FSU leads 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Seminoles have outhit CC 7-2.
FSU pitcher Trey Beard off to a strong start
Beard has recorded four strikeouts in a pair of scoreless innings for the Seminoles, who lead 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Starter Luke Jones on the mound for CC
The sophomore righty has a 4.62 ERA. Jones stranded a runner at second base with a ground out to end the bottom of the sixth.
FSU leads 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh.
Trey Beard on the mound as FSU-CC game resumes
FSU lefty starter Trey Beard is on the mound for the Seminoles as the game, following a pair of weather delays Saturday, has resumed. Beard is making his first appearance in 16 days.
The game is being streamed on ESPN+ and televised on ESPNU.
Beard stranded a runner at third base with a swinging strikeout to end the top of the sixth inning.
Here’s the latest, weather forecast for Sunday, May 31
Mother Nature has done her best to disrupt the Tallahassee Regional. However, the show must go on – and the four-team field returns to Howser Stadium Sunday.
So, here’s the latest.
The suspended elimination game between No. 10 national seed FSU and Coastal Carolina is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. Sunday morning with the Seminoles leading 2-1 entering the top of the sixth inning. Fans with tickets or the suspended game will need to present their tickets for entry to today’s resumption, according to FSU.
Following the conclusion of the FSU-Coastal game, Northern Illinois and St. John’s will play in the winners’ bracket game at 2 p.m. Game five of the Tallahassee Regional, featuring the winner of the resumed game and the loser of the winner’s-bracket game, is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The weather forecast looks promising early, with only a 20% chance of rain heading into the early afternoon. That percentage, of course, only expects to increase with the sunny, muggy conditions.
According to The Weather Channel, this morning’s cloudy skies will be “followed by scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. High 89F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 50%.”
And, according to National Weather Service Forecasters in Tallahassee, an “active day” is expected Sunday, with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and evening. The storms could produce heavy rainfall capable of flash flooding, particularly across parts of southwest Georgia, southeast Alabama and northern Florida.
Play suspended in the 6th inning, will resume Sunday morning
FSU’s Tallahassee Regional game against Coastal Carolina has been suspended after two weather delays that paused play for over four hours.
The No. 10-seeded Seminoles lead, 2-1, after a Cal Fisher home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, moments before the second and final weather delay of the day.
The final four innings of the game will be played on Sunday morning, with the time to be determined. FSU announced that times for Sunday and the remainder of the regional schedule will be announced later Saturday night.
The winners’ bracket game between Northern Illinois and St. John’s will be played Sunday afternoon, after the conclusion of the Seminoles game vs. Coastal Carolina.

First base was flooded, and the grounds crew has been raking it and adding fresh dirt to the infield to try to restart play.
