The Red Raiders (23-24, 7-17 in the Big 12) only have seven games remaining in the regular season. Returning home after yet another conference series loss serves as the last chance to save their season. Their non-conference schedule closes today with a return trip from DBU (28-20, 16-8 in Conference USA). The Patriots are meeting the Red Raiders with a little momentum on their side, going 5-2 over their last seven games. That included a win over a shared opponent beating Abilene Chrisitan 16-4 (Texas Tech took down ACU 15-4 on March 31st). Can the Texas Tech baseball team start to string wins together against quality opponents? Or will the lack of pitching finally doom this team from any postseason baseball?
Extended Rubber Match Redemption
These two teams first met over a month ago in Dallas for a mid-week showdown. When these teams met in mid-March, the Red Raiders jumped out to a lead of 6-0 after two innings. They also held a 7-2 lead after the top half of the fourth inning. But DBU would not only score seven in the bottom of the fourth but would score at least one run in each inning for the rest of the game. In fact, DBU registered a run in all but one inning (not including the bottom of the 9th as they already held the lead). The Red Raiders couldn’t outslug the Patriots that day as they fell 16-10.
When Texas Tech has allowed double-digit runs this season, they are a dreadful 2-17. It is well known that this Red Raider baseball offense is among the best in the country. But that .105 winning percentage when the pitching staff yields double-digit runs proves two things. The first is that 40% of the games this Texas Tech baseball team has played this year have resulted in the opponent scoring at least 10 runs. The second is reinforcing one of the core fundamentals of the sport; good pitching typically beats good hitting. Just like one cannot outwork a bad diet when trying to lose weight, this baseball team cannot slug its way to victories without some help from the pitching staff.
Red Raider Baseball’s Big 12 Tournament Hopes Dangling
The game on Tuesday has no direct impact on Texas Tech’s Big 12 postseason hopes. But a win over DBU would be the first time the Red Raiders have won consecutive games this year since taking down Tarleton State and ACU back-to-back on April 21-22nd. Any momentum heading into the last Big 12 homestand of the season will be valuable. While consistent wins have been hard to come by in 2026, Tim Tadlock’s team has been a strong 13-4 against non-Big 12 teams at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. First pitch is slated for 6:30 pm CST, and the game can be streamed live on ESPN+.
