Fresh Faces On The Forty: New Texas guard Mikey Lewis

We have reached the final transfer portal new face(as of right now) and it’s Mikey Lewis. Lewis joins the Longhorns from Saint Mary’s, where he served as the starting PG for the Gaels last season. He’ll likely figure into the bench rotation for Texas, which could bring stability to a younger unit. Lewis, despite not being the highest rated transfer, could prove to be as valuable as any addition for Sean Miller.

2025 Stats: 13.9 PPG, 2.7 REB, 2.1 AST, 36.8 3-PT%(5.6 ATT per game)

Last season, Lewis made a habit of being one of the most consistent players on his team. He had just five games in conference play where he scored less than 10 points. Down the stretch of the season, he has games of four 20-point games, including 31 points on 7 threes against Gonzaga. The outside shooting upside should be a perfect combination with Isaiah Johnson’s downhill scoring attack.

One of the interesting wrinkles of bringing Lewis over is Saint Mary’s slow pace of play. The Gaels averaged just 67.7 possessions per game, while Texas averaged 70.3. That’s not a massive difference but it could lead to one or two more transition threes for Lewis a game. On top of that, those looks are more likely to be totally clean in transition than in true half court offense. That could take Lewis from 14 points per game to 17-20 points per game quickly.

The portal class that Sean Miller brought in this offseason is one of the best in the country. Isaiah Johnson and David Punch are the marquee names. Amari Evans and Elyjah Freeman are the high-ceiling, exciting players. Mikey Lewis brings stability and confidence to the group that was needed. He’s played in 68 games in his career, starting 33 of them and playing every role imaginable. He could be on his way to a breakout season for a team that figures to compete for an SEC title.

Mikey Lewis rounds out the remarkable portal class but that’s not where the additions stop. The recruiting class Sean Miller brought in is equally as exciting. Tomorrow, we’ll start with the crown-jewel of the class and a Longhorn legacy of sorts, Austin Goosby.
