The first Sun Bowl Parade was held on New Year’s Day, 1936, as a run-in to the second Sun Bowl celebrate Texas history as part of the Texas Centennial year celebration. In 1978 it moved to Thanksgiving in hopes of better weather and has been a Thanksgiving staple in El Paso since.

Other events under the Sun Bowl umbrella include the WestStar Don Haskins Sun Bowl Basketball Invitational and the Nusenda Credit Union Sun Bowl Pickleball Tournament, a youth basketball skills camp, a cheer camp, a fan golf challenge and an art exhibit.
