A fiery one-vehicle crash south of Sturgeon Bay the evening of April 28 closed a county highway for three and a half hours and resulted in two people being taken to a hospital.
A news release from the Door County Sheriff’s Office said the department was notified of the crash at County S and Tagge Road in the Town of Nasewaupee at approximately 5:21 p.m.
Upon arrival, the responding deputy saw the driver of pickup truck that was towing a trailer lying outside the vehicle, but a passenger was still inside it. The passenger was extricated from the truck before it became fully engulfed in flames. Both the driver and passenger were transported to Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay for treatment.
The initial investigation indicated the truck was traveling north on County S when it crossed into the southbound lane, then left the road, struck a tree and caught on fire, the news release said.
Responding to the accident were rescue personnel from the Nasewaupee Fire Department, Nasewaupee Emergency Medical Responders, Sturgeon Bay Fire Department and Door County Emergency Services, as well as the sheriff’s office. County S was closed because of the crash but reopened to traffic at 8:58 p.m.
The incident remains under investigation.
