Ninety local employees could potentially lose their jobs in June after a beverage distribution company reached an agreement to sell its Texas operations this spring.
Texas law requires large companies to provide 60 days’ notice before potential mass layoffs to protect workers and their families.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission’s WARN Act listings, Republic National Distributing Company provided notice on April 23 that it may lay off 90 workers on June 21 at its facility in Corpus Christi.
The company also provided notice for 164 potential layoffs in Travis County, 689 potential layoffs in Tarrant County, 588 potential layoffs in Harris County and 372 potential layoffs in Bexar County at the same time.
The company notified the Texas Workforce Commission and mayors of impacted cities of potential layoffs in an April 23 letter. The letter states that, “as a result of the pending Reyes transaction,” the company expects it will cease operations at certain facilities. However, some employees might receive employment offers from or may continue to be employed by Reyes, according to the letter.
“However, we are providing this notice to you at this time since there is not guarantee that Reyes will provide employees with an offer of employment as discussions remain ongoing, and it is not yet known who will be needed to continue employment with the company,” the letter read.
Republic National Distributing Company is an alcohol distributer specializing in wine and spirits, according to the company website.
The company entered into purchase agreements with Reyes Beverage Group for operations in 10 states and Washington, D.C., according to a March 20 news release from Reyes Beverage Group.
The WARN Act requires companies with 100 or more full-time workers to provide written notice 60 days before a mass layoff or plant closing.
The Republic National Distributing Company notice is the first involving Nueces County workers submitted to the state by any company since Horton Automatics announced plans to lay off 63 in early 2024.
