Corpus Christi police have arrested a man who they say shot at officers, prompting one officer to fire back, at an Ocean Drive residence the night of July 7.
Chad Wayne Rodney, 53, faces charges of six counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after doctors cleared him at a local hospital, according to a news release written by Corpus Christi Police Department officer Madeline Vaughn.
According to police, the shooting happened at about 11 p.m. as police officers and Corpus Christi Fire Department personnel responded to an unknown EMS call at an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Ocean Drive.
When the officers arrived and tried to talk to Rodney through the front door of the apartments, he began firing rounds through the door of the apartment, the news release said.
The man stepped into the breezeway and fired rounds in both directions toward the officers, hitting one officer in the leg, according to police.
Another officer returned fire, striking Rodney in the leg.
Medics took the officer and Rodney to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The officers will be placed on administrative leave according to the department’s policy.
Police Chief Mike Markle said the department does not know how many rounds were fired or Rodney’s type of weapon or caliber.
Rodney is in custody as the police investigation continues.
