A lot has been made of Texas Tech and the Red Raiders’ schedule over the past several months. As one of the best teams in the Big 12 Conference, Joey McGuire and his team have had to hear comments about their relative lack of schedule strength, with their toughest games this year coming against the likes of the Houston Cougars, Arizona State Sun Devils, Oklahoma State Cowboys, and TCU Horned Frogs.
That pales in comparison to teams in the Big Ten or SEC, but McGuire is once again trying to do something about it.
This week at the Big 12 Media Days, McGuire proposed once again that he wants his team to play other programs inside Texas during the non-conference. This means both the Texas Longhorns and SMU Mustangs are on his radar.
“If you’re a Texan & you’re a fan of football in this state, then why would you go outside the state to play non-conference games?” McGuire said. “Because you have such good football in this state. I would love to play Texas, Texas A&M & SMU because I think it’s great for the state of Texas.”
We saw earlier this offseason that McGuire went as far as to offer to buy out the Week 1 opponent for the Longhorns — Texas State — in order to clear the week for an in-state matchup between Texas and Texas Tech. Nothing came of that, but we will see if there can be some more Lone Star State rivalries going forward.
